Backing up all your email and relevant settings can be a nightmare. I needed to migrate all my data and settings to a new laptop and the most important was that my email and all the settings and rules were transferred as well, after tons of Google searching I found the best way to do this in XP is by using “Microsoft Office 2003 Save My Settings Wizard” which backed up all my setting for all my Office programs into one file which I run on the new laptop once office was installed and then I copied the email files to the new laptop.

The email files are located in the following directory on XP: c:\Documents and Settings\{USER NAME}\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ you can copy all this directories contents and paste it in the equivalent directory on your new/formatted PC.

I recommended this tool to a family member but he soon found out that it does not work on Vista or the latest version of Office but he did find a very cool program which does all the back ups and saving of your email settings, which makes migrating to a new computer or reinstalling your current one a lot easier. He did have a problem at first with backing up but after logging a ticket with their support section they resolved the problem over the weekend. The program is calling “Backup E-mail” and is available from http://www.backup-email.com/email-backup/ for a cost of $24.95 USD. The person who used it said their after sales support was brilliant as well.
