A family member was all of a sudden getting a these SSL certificate errors on all websites using the HTTPS protocol in both Internet Explorer and FireFox so I knew it had to be something on Windows XP.

I checked that there were certificates loaded under the browser certificate settings and the list was fairly large so that was not a problem, and there were trusted root certificates loaded. Keep reading…

Much easier way of upgrading WordPress

I hate having to up date WordPress or any of the plugins each time a new version comes out. Its not hard to do the updates but it is time consuming especially if you have a slow Internet connection.

I was having problems with my PC (XP Pro) it keep jamming and the hard drive getting close to full so I decided to clean out my drive and uninstall those programs which have built up over time but never get used.

So I began by running Windows Disk Clean Up (Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools) which took about an hour to scan everything it needs to.  It gave me a list of things that it was able to “cleanup” and some were select which I assume are the recommend options to select and so I select all of them.  I then click on OK and it did it thing.

I was hoping that this would free up a lot more space than it did, but I’m not complaining as I have not started uninstalling unused programs yet. I managed to remove a couple of programs but there those pesky once which did not want to uninstall. Then somebody recommended “Crap Cleaner” to me, so I got Googling for this program and found it has been renamed to CCleaner and is develop by a company called Piriform.

Let me say there are quite a few options to select when running CCleaner so I just selected them all and ran the program. It did a brilliant job and remove a lot of things that Disk Cleanup missed, but let me warn you it removes a lot of things your not expecting including recently opened files are not listed in Office, all web address you have been to, any saved passwords for websites and you will see as you go along after running CCleaner but it was worth it and I’m sure if you read each setting before running you could prevent this from happening to your most used things.

Then it has a program uninstaller built in which remove those programs which just don’t uninstall using the regular Windows uninstaller, I thought this was great.

Well if anyone wants to download CCleaner you can from their website:

Let me know what you think of this program or if you know of any similar programs?
